The Mulkey is Back!

After eleven years of work and $1 million, the Mulkey Theatre opened its doors to the public Memorial Day weekend 2019 starting with a gala event on Saturday, May 25.

In addition to a red carpet entrance and food and refreshments, organizers planned a program to take attendees back in time to the opening of the 1946 Mulkey Theatre while also demonstrating the facilities new capabilities as a multi-use venue.

The Mulkey’s first live musical performance was the South Plains Jazz Orchestra from Levelland playing big band hits from the 1940s. The featured motion picture presentation for the grand opening was a 1946 John Wayne and Claudette Colbert movie, “Without Reservations.”

The Grand Opening weekend continued on Sunday, May 26, and Monday, May 27, with FREE admission matinees at 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. each day.

Today, the Mulkey Theatre's general schedule this summer is shows at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, with a 2 p.m. matinee on Sunday. Special events are also being prepared for the upcoming months, including two Red Steagall performances on September 28.

For more information, call the Visitor Center at 806-874-SHOW.

Our Story So Far

The Mulkey Theatre is a treasure not only to our community, but to the State of Texas as well, earning a designation as one of Preservation Texas’ 2011 “Most Endangered Places.” The 1946 Mulkey Theatre is a landmark of downtown Clarendon and that has been renovated at the hands of the Clarendon Economic Development Corporation. The 11-year effort has restored the building as a functioning movie theatre as well as given it new life as a performance hall and event venue.

As part of its ongoing mission to revitalize downtown, the Clarendon EDC purchased the Mulkey in 2008; and since that time has invested more than $1 million to rehabilitate the building. The former barbershop in the front of the theatre was converted to the city's new Visitor Center, housing CEDC / Chamber of Commerce office in 2012. Phase One of the overall Mulkey Renovation Project completed the rehabilitation of the façade. Phase 2 work completed renovations to the box office, concession area, lobby, and restrooms. Phase 3 focused on stage expansion and accessibility issues. Phase 4 work included new HVAC systems, new audio/video systems, stage lighting, theatre seating and more.

In addition to a movie house and live performance hall, the Mulkey now serves as a conference center and is available for rent for special events, such as reunions, birthday parties, business meetings, etc. Call the Visitor Center for available dates and rates.

Even though the Mulkey is now open to serve the public, there are still more improvements planned for the future. Project managers intend to add a small kitchen area accessible from the balcony to add more versatility to special events in that location. Longer range plans are to add the availability of dressing rooms to the theatre to expand opportunities for live performances.  If you would like a make a donation to help maintain the theatre and further its future growth, please send your check or money order to Clarendon Community Fund, c/o Clarendon EDC, PO Box 826, and note “Mulkey Theatre” in the memo or click the “donate” button below.  If you choose to donate online through the button below, be sure to select “Donley County Affiliate Fund” in the drop down menu.
